Topic Overview:

Habitat Studio has played a role in establishing Edmonton as the leading net zero energy market in Canada.  Participating in CMHC's Equilibrium Housing Initiative exposed Habitat Studio to Net Zero Energy and Passive House researchers, advocates, practitioners and program developers from across the continent.

Habitat Studio has completed six net zero energy houses with four more under construction.  One of the houses under construction is part of NRCan's R2000 Net Zero Energy Pilot program.  The houses being built under this program have benefited from the lessons learnt by the EQ pioneers and demonstrate practical, proven techniques.  Habitat Studio is also developing a 16 unit non-profit net zero energy stacked town house project in partnership with the Internet Housing Society and the Westmount Presbyterian Church.

Speaker:

Peter Amerongen is a Certified Passive House Consultant and serves on the board of the Net Zero Energy Home Coalition, Passive Buildings Canada and the Management Committee of the CHBA Net Zero Council.  He is also part of the project team for the Mosaic Centre, a 30,000 square foot net zero energy office building nearing completion in Edmonton.

Peter Amerongen will use the insights from the above-mentioned projects and work from his work with net zero energy and Passive House colleagues from across North America to demonstrate that Net Zero Energy buildings are no longer an exotic novelty.  They are ready for prime time.

The presentation will include:

  • Step by step procedures for designing net zero energy buildings that are achievable anywhere, including cold prairie climates
  • Why these buildings are better, not just for the environment, but also for the people who live and work in them - they are healthier, more comfortable, and more durable
  • A review of the benefits of the Passive House approach and why the Passive House methodology is a great tool for achieving net zero energy performance
